4/29/07 PATTAN Verbal Behavior video

Just a little apology for making alot of changes and additions to the pages...

things will settle down soon, but there is alot of new info that has been added.

I wanted to point out a really awesome video, esp. if it's going to be a while until

you can get to a workshop...

Look on the FAQs ABOUT VERBAL BEHAVIOR PAGE for the video from PATTAN on verbal behavior.

It's about 4 hours long, and might be a little heavy-duty starting out, but

it's a good grounding if you are someone who learns well from video.

This entire section has been expanded, so check it out if you have a chance. :-).

Have a great week.

If you know of any further papers or evidence that has been useful in persuading either

insurance carriers or legislators, please CONTACT US.

It's important for everyone to be able to make the best case for the medical and societal supports of our children

and family members, and we would love to post the evidence here. THANKS!

Have a good day!

4/26/07 Intensive teaching results in dramatic improvements

Thursday, April 26, 2007

The Guardian

A two-year British study into the impact of early intensive behavioural intervention (EIBI) found that some toddlers on the programme jumped 40 IQ points. A quarter showed "very substantial improvements", and none regressed.

The youngsters also showed more advanced language and better daily living skills than similar children in a control group who received standard educational support such as speech therapy..."

Feb 13-15, Calgary, Alberta, Canada: Introduction to Verbal Behavior: Teaching Communication Skills to Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Dr. Vincent J. Carbone, Ed.D., BCBA

Introduction to Verbal Behavior: Teaching Communication Skills to Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities

February 13-15, 2008 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Presented by Dr. Vincent J. Carbone, Ed.D., Board Certified Behavior Analyst

Workshop sponsored by the Janus Academy

REGISTER NOW at http://www.janusacademy.com

Dr. Vincent J. Carbone is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with over 30 years of experience designing learning environments for

persons with autism and development disabilities.

This workshop focuses on the behavioral approach to teaching

communication skills to children with autism and other developmental

disabilities. This approach is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of

verbal behavior and the research of Drs. Jack Michael, Mark Sundberg, James Partington and others.

Participants in this workshop will learn to:

• conduct a Behavioral Language Assessment;

• select the most appropriate form of communication for a child

(vocalizing, signing, pointing to or exchanging pictures, or

activating an augmentative device);

• select the communication responses and supporting skills that

should be taught first.

The workshop includes the recommended teaching procedures for those

children who have no formal communication skills to those that are

near conversational speakers. Dr. Carbone also describes and

demonstrates errorless teaching, specific quick-transfer (prompting

and fading) procedures, and the use of both discrete trial training

in the natural environment and during intensive teaching sessions.

Many video tape demonstrations are provided to illustrate the methods

to increase spontaneous language and to develop conversational

skills.
